What is the story behind this "Wampum" token??

Wieboldt's was a Chicago, Illinois based Department Store that operated from 1883 to 1986. The store was promotion minded and in the 1940's and 1950's always gave S & H Green Stamps away with purchases.

One of the store's promotions in the 1930's and early 1940's was the Wampum Club that it organized for young folks. The Club had its own store money called "Wampum" - like the old Native American currency. Wampum was given away with purchases of one dollar or more. A Wampum Club Trading Post was organized in every store where boys and girls could buy toys and toy prices were marked in terms of the Wampum Currency. The more the parents spent at the store, the more Wampum they accumulated and the more toys their children could buy. Kids could also watch the store's newspaper ads, which during special events offered two free bits of Wampum to club members who brought in the ad.
