Fort Keogh was sited in 1876, after the Custer massacre. Initially it was known as The Cantonment on the Toung River, Toung River Barracks and New Post on the Yellowstone. By 1877 it had become Fort Custer. By the 1908-09 period it became a general supply depot and was renamed Fort Keogh.
