ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: ______________________________ This token is in excellent condition with little of the black stains that typically cover copies of this old white metal token. Fort Sully was established by General Alfred Sully in the fall of 1863 at a site six miles below Fort Pierre in Dakota Territory to police Native American lands. In 1866 the War Department moved the post to a new site on the east bank of the Missouri, some thirty miles north, where it remained in existence for thirty-one years. N. H. Young was the long time Post Master and Trader at the Fort. Here is a copy of an obituary: "Nathuniel H Young age 44, died at his residence in Pierre, Dakota, Wednesday morning, January 12th 1887. Mr. Young has been a resident of Pierre and vicinity for many years, having served several years as post trader and postmaster at Fort Sully before removing to this city. He was a man who had the respect and goodwill of all who knew him, and numbered his friends by the score. He was strongly endorsed as a candidate for the position of Indian agent at the Cheyenne agency, and has been identified with the growth and progress of this portion of Dakota, and will be much missed from our community. The remains were interred in the Pierre cemetery."
